Story
By the time the city alarms cut through the night air, the old wolf 'Luna' had already disappeared into the concrete maze. The zoo prepared for a forceful crackdown involving helicopters and tranquilizer guns, but Jin-woo, a wildlife behavior analyst, thought differently.
If you chase them blindly, they will hide or attack. Forced capture can be fatal to old and exhausted individuals. We must predict their movements and wait there first.
Jinwoo unfolded the map and began to cross-reference Luna's usual habits with the urban terrain data. He sought to control the situation with thorough logic and strategic thinking rather than being swept away by emotion.
Noise Avoidance: An outer green space near a sound barrier where one can avoid the horns and sirens of the city center.
Wind Direction: A headwind section where you can conceal your own scent and detect the enemy's scent in advance.
Securing a sense of stability: A high-altitude area with a blocked back and guaranteed unobstructed views to reduce anxiety.
Jinwoo's analysis, combining these three variables, pointed to only one place: an abandoned quarry hill on the outskirts of the city.
When Jinwoo arrived at the top of the quarry, an unusually large and bright full moon hung in the night sky. And bathed in that moonlight, Luna, a silver-gray wolf, sat at the edge of the cliff.
She was not running away blindly. Luna, who had spent her entire life behind narrow bars seeing only fake rocks and cement floors, chose a 'journey toward the moon'—simply to reach the place closest to the night sky of her hometown—in what might be her last moment of freedom.
An urgent signal came over the radio that an armed capture team was approaching. Jin-woo turned off the radio and, instead of the tranquilizer gun, took out the old blanket and water bottle that Luna liked best at the zoo.
The most perfect capture is not about subduing the opponent by force, but about making them walk in of their own accord. Jinwoo lowered his posture as much as possible and slowly spread the blanket on the floor from below the wolf's eye level. This was a clear and logical signal that there was no threat, and at the same time, an expression of deep compassion for the creature's weary life.
Luna turned her head to look at Jinwoo. His calm expression was reflected in her amber eyes, which had been filled with wariness. As the night breeze blew, the familiar scent of the blanket brushed past the wolf's nose.
A few minutes of suffocating tension felt like an hour. Finally, Luna slowly climbed down from the edge of the cliff and laid her heavy body down on the blanket Jinwoo had spread out. It was not a surrender of defeat, but a silent permission to the only being who had fully understood her last night walk.
Good job. Let's go back now.
When Jinwoo carefully placed a makeshift leash around Luna's neck, she accepted his touch without any resistance. It was a touching capture created solely by precise analysis and warm understanding of the subject, requiring neither the loud sound of a helicopter nor a threatening tranquilizer gun.
The moonlight, appearing once again through the clouds, was quietly breaking down onto the backs of the two creatures walking side by side down the hill.
